About Laura

Laura Johnson currently holds the title of Assistant Conductor of the Bay Youth Wind Symphony and is the band director at Oscar Smith Middle School in Chesapeake, Virginia. Laura received her Master of Music Education (Conducting Concentration) degree from Old Dominion University in 2020. Prior to moving to Virginia, Laura received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Gustavus Adolphus College. She taught middle school band and general music in Sartell, Minnesota and served as an instructor for youth summer band camps and marching programs in the Twin Cities. 

Laura has performed with and conducted ensembles on an international scale, making her international conducting debut with the Windiana Concert Band during their 2018 tour of Italy. In May 2020, Laura co-founded the group “Women Banding Together” as a resource for mentorship of women band directors. She is a proud member of Pi Kappa Lambda, Women Band Directors International, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Education, and Kappa Kappa Psi.
