About Donny

Dr. Donny Allen has directed university, high school, and middle school bands throughout Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. He holds a BM and MM from East Carolina University, and the DMA from the University of Memphis. He is currently the Director of Bands at Grassfield High School. The program includes the Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, 9th Grade Band, Winter Guard, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Chamber Ensembles.

Previously, he served as Director of Bands at South Forsyth High School, in Forsyth County, Georgia. A National Band Association Citation of Excellence winner, the bands at South were invited to perform for the UGA JanFest Clinic and Georgia Music Educators Association Honor Band Clinic. Dr. Allen has also served as an Instrumental Music Program Consultant for Seminole County Schools in Florida. In this position he served as an Associate Director for the Oviedo High School Bands. Donny’s secondary school teaching experience began as Director of Bands for West Craven High School in Vanceboro, North Carolina.

At the university level, Donny served as the Director of Athletic Bands and Associate Director of Bands at the University of Central Florida. He served as Director of the Marching Knights and conductor of the Symphonic Band and Concert Band. Dr. Allen was the Coordinator for Instrumental Music Education, teaching music education methods courses and supervising student teachers in the Florida public schools. Donny has also served as the Assistant Director of Bands for the Georgia Institute of Technology. There he was Conductor of the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, and was the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands.

Dr. Allen has extensive experience in the marching arts. He is currently a member of the brass staff with the Santa Clara Vanguard. Previously, he was as a member of the brass staff for the Cavaliers. He was a marching member of the Bluecoats then served for fourteen seasons as a brass instructor for the corps, as well as four seasons as a brass instructor for the Spirit of Atlanta.

Dr. Allen served in the U.S. Army bands as staff conductor and horn instrumentalist for the Infantry Band at Ft. Benning, GA and the Signal Corps Band at Ft. Gordon, GA. He holds membership in the International Horn Society, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association, Virginia Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and honorary memberships in Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma.

He and his wife, Deborah, live in Chesapeake, Virginia with their son, Daniel.
